Video: MacKenzie in C4 doorstepping confrontation

In an old-fashioned act of doorstepping, Channel 4 News reporter Alex Thomson visits the home of Kelvin MacKenzie to question the former Sun editor over his scandalous reportage of the Hillsborough disaster. (See the footage below.)

MacKenzie issued a ‘profuse apology’ last week, 23 years after his front page story headlined ‘The Truth’ smeared Liverpool fans and furthered an establishment cover-up described by commentators as the “biggest” in post-war British history.

Channel 4 says he has since refused invitations to a follow-up interview. When Thomson turns to doorstepping, MacKenzie refuses to answer his door. Undeterred, Thomson waits outside and MacKenzie eventually comes out to get into his 4×4 – but the C4 man refuses to let him go easily. Wedging himself between MacKenzie and the door and doggedly repeating his questions, MacKenzie tries to slam the door shut as Thomson says “do not assault me”.

So what  do you think? Is MacKenzie getting a righteous dose of his own medicine? Or is Thomson sinking to a cheap and unprofessional stunt which ironically makes MacKenzie look like the victim?

“Before we all sink into a slough of digital dystopian despair, it might be worth considering this: is this a sign of the strength, not weakness, of revelatory journalism in the digital age?”
