TV presenter Jimmy Tarbuck arrested over sex abuse allegations

Arrested: TV Presenter Jimmy Tarbuck has been arrested in connection with sex abuse allegations

Veteran television presenter and comedian Jimmy Tarbuck has been arrested in connection with a sex abuse investigation that took place over 30 years ago.

Mr Tarbuck was questioned by North Yorkshire police 12 days ago about an incident that allegedly took place with a young boy in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, in the late 1970s.

The entertainer is known by generations for a career spanning over 50 years and was awarded an OBE by the Queen for his work in show-business in 1994. Tarbuck rose to fame in the 1960s with a TV breakthrough for ITV called It’s Tarbuck 65! He has hosted Sunday Night at the London Palladium and numerous quiz shows, including Winner Takes All and Full Swing. Last November he performed in the Royal Variety Performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

A statement by North Yorkshire police said: “North Yorkshire police can confirm that a 73-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a historic child sex abuse investigation in Harrogate.

“The man was arrested in Kingston upon Thames on Friday 26 April 2013. Following questioning, he was released on police bail pending further inquiries.

“The complaint relates to an incident that occurred in the late 1970s when the victim was a young boy.

“It would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage.”

They also stressed that Tarbuck’s arrest was not related to Operation Yewtree, in which detectives are investigating the sex abuse allegations surrounding Jimmy Savile.

A number of veteran TV stars have been arrested in the wake of the Savile scandal. Last week former BBC star Stuart Hall pleaded guilty to assaulting 13 girls between the 1960s and 1980s. The news of the arrest has seen more victims come forward with complaints.

“Before we all sink into a slough of digital dystopian despair, it might be worth considering this: is this a sign of the strength, not weakness, of revelatory journalism in the digital age?”

Charlie Beckett, director of POLIS at the London School of Economics, reacts to news that the UK government forced the Guardian into destroying hard drives that contained information leaked by Edward Snowden.
