NoW joins Times behind paywall

News International has confirmed that the News of the World will go behind a paywall from October.

The redtop follows NI’s Times website, which started charging for content in June.

A new NoW website featuring “better delivery, content and greater depth” will initially cost £1 for a day’s access or £2 for a four-week subscription.

“Before we all sink into a slough of digital dystopian despair, it might be worth considering this: is this a sign of the strength, not weakness, of revelatory journalism in the digital age?”

Charlie Beckett, director of POLIS at the London School of Economics, reacts to news that the UK government forced the Guardian into destroying hard drives that contained information leaked by Edward Snowden.
