Facebook looks to UK for mobile talent

Mark Zuckerberg is well aware of the challenge mobile represents to his all-powerful social media network, Facebook.

Therefore, he’s hoping that the opening of its first engineering office outside of the States, in London, will provide the talent that can solve his conundrums.

Facebook’s team of mobile developers will be based in Covent Garden, at Facebook’s new British headquarters.

It’s an encouraging sign for Britain’s technology industry, which Facebook sees as a “perfect fit” for what it needs.

Zuckerberg is clearly a fan of what Britain offers: “[London is] a global hub, and it has a vibrant local start-up community with lots of great technical talent,” he said – on Facebook, naturally.

Facebook isn’t the only online giant looking to London for developer talent. Google and Amazon have also made serious investments in the capital.

“Before we all sink into a slough of digital dystopian despair, it might be worth considering this: is this a sign of the strength, not weakness, of revelatory journalism in the digital age?”

Charlie Beckett, director of POLIS at the London School of Economics, reacts to news that the UK government forced the Guardian into destroying hard drives that contained information leaked by Edward Snowden.
